Baron Empain Palace

An unlikely landmark

Belgian industrialist Édouard Empain built Heliopolis from scratch in the early 1900s as a planned desert suburb northeast of central Cairo, and topped it off with a private residence unlike anything else in Egypt — a palace modeled on Hindu and Khmer temple architecture, complete with elephant sculptures, intricate stonework, and a rotating design that reportedly let the Baron follow the sun through his rooms. It sat empty and crumbling for decades after his family left Egypt, adding a haunted-house reputation that only made it more locally famous.

Visiting today

Following restoration, the palace is open to the public and lit dramatically at night, when its unusual silhouette is at its most striking. The interior is comparatively sparse — this is a visit for the architecture and the story more than a museum-style collection — so most visitors treat it as a focused hour rather than a half-day stop.
