Day Trips from Cairo
Cairo is a good base for more than the city itself. A well-planned day trip reaches the Mediterranean coast, the pyramid fields south of Giza, or — with an early flight — Luxor's Valley of the Kings.
How far you can realistically go
Saqqara and Dahshur are close enough to combine with Giza in a single busy day. Alexandria is a comfortable return trip by car or train (about 2.5–3 hours each way). Luxor and Aswan are technically day-trippable by early flight, but they reward an overnight stay far more — most visitors treat them as a short extension rather than a day trip.

What is the best day trip from Cairo?
Saqqara and Dahshur, if you only have time for one — you'll see the Step Pyramid of Djoser (the world's oldest large stone monument) and the Bent and Red Pyramids, usually with a fraction of the crowds at Giza. Alexandria is the best choice if you want a change of scenery on the coast.
Can you do Luxor as a day trip from Cairo?
Yes, on an early-morning flight, but it's tight — you'll see the major sites on the East and West Banks but spend a large chunk of the day traveling. Most people who make it that far stay at least one night.
