What the board actually approved

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the decision after Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy chaired a meeting of the NMEC authority’s board at the museum in Fustat on Sunday 20 September. The board approved a proposal to increase admission prices for the archaeological halls and restoration laboratories, with the new pricing due to take effect on 1 April 2027.

That gives visitors plenty of warning, but it does not yet tell us what an April ticket will cost. The announcement did not publish a replacement tariff for Egyptians, students, Arab visitors or other international visitors, and the checked official ticket page is not displaying a future-April price table.

The useful distinction is simple: a price rise has been approved, but the amount of the rise is still unknown.

What tickets cost right now

At the time of this 22 September check, the official Egyptian monuments booking platform lists NMEC admission at EGP 90 for an Egyptian adult and EGP 45 for an Egyptian student. For Arab and other-nationality visitors, it lists EGP 550 for an adult and EGP 300 for a student.

Those are the current online figures, not a prediction of what the museum will charge after 1 April 2027. If you are travelling months from now, especially close to or after the changeover date, re-check the official booking page before building a budget around today’s prices.

For a visit in the next few weeks or months, there is no basis in the board announcement for assuming the higher tariff has started early. The reported effective date is 1 April 2027.

A new 5% tourism-company discount is separate

The same board meeting approved a new discount category for tourism companies buying museum exhibition-hall tickets in bulk. Companies purchasing bundles of between 250 and 500 tickets can receive a 5% discount, and those bundled tickets are valid for three months from the purchase date.

That is an industry arrangement, not a blanket five-percent discount for individual visitors. A couple buying two tickets should not expect the new company rate to apply to them.

For tour operators, the rule matters because it changes the economics of larger groups and gives a defined validity window. Operators should still confirm implementation details with the museum before relying on the discount for a future group quote.

School visits were also on the agenda

The board also approved conduct rules plus booking and visit instructions for school trips using the ministry’s Rehla platform. That is separate from the public ticket increase, but it signals that NMEC is formalising several parts of its visitor-management system at the same time.

Schools and organisers should use the official booking route rather than treating public walk-up ticket rules as a substitute for school-group procedures.

What this means for travellers planning 2027

For most independent travellers, there is nothing urgent to do today. The decision matters mainly if you are pricing a Cairo trip for April 2027 or later. Until NMEC publishes the new tariff, any seller claiming an exact April 2027 admission price should be checked against a later official update.

The sensible approach is to use current prices only as a placeholder, then check again closer to travel. Museum and archaeological-site fees can change independently, and student eligibility depends on valid identification.

NMEC remains one of Cairo’s major museum stops, including the Royal Mummies Hall and galleries tracing Egyptian civilisation across a much broader span than a single Pharaonic period. The ticket decision changes the future cost of the visit; it does not change the museum’s location or current opening schedule.

Practical NMEC details

NMEC’s official visitor information lists the museum at El-Fustat Road, Ein Elsira, Cairo. Published hours are 09:00–17:00 Saturday to Thursday, with last daytime ticket admission at 16:00. Friday also has the 09:00–17:00 daytime session plus an evening session from 18:00–21:00, with last evening admission at 20:00.

The museum identifies Mar Gerges as the closest Metro station, making NMEC relatively easy to combine with an Old Cairo and Fustat day.

The dates and numbers worth remembering

The board decision was announced on 20 September 2026. The higher admission tariff is due to begin on 1 April 2027. The amount of that future tariff has not yet been published in the sources checked for this article. Current official online admission remains EGP 90/45 for Egyptian adult/student categories and EGP 550/300 for Arab or other-nationality adult/student categories.

For tourism companies, the new bulk-ticket category is a 5% discount on qualifying exhibition-hall tickets when buying 250–500 tickets, with three months’ validity.

If NMEC publishes the new April prices before your visit, use that later official tariff rather than this snapshot. This story is about an approved future change, not an unknown number dressed up as a confirmed price.
